Eat like it matters
No superfood makes sperm. But the overall pattern on your plate shows up in the lab work - here's the honest version, effect sizes included.
Nutrition headlines oversell single foods; the real evidence is about patterns. Here's what the research actually supports, with the effect sizes kept honest.
The pattern that keeps winning
Across dozens of studies, the same dietary shape associates with better semen quality: lots of vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, whole grains and olive oil; less processed meat, fried food, sweets and sugary drinks. Call it Mediterranean; the label matters less than the shape. Men eating closest to this pattern consistently show better concentration and motility than men eating furthest from it.
The honest caveat: most of this is observational - men who eat well differ in many ways - so treat it as a strong lean, not a proven cause. But the lean is remarkably consistent, the mechanism (antioxidant load, healthy fats, less metabolic stress) is plausible, and the downside of eating this way is zero.
The few foods with their own evidence
- Fish - the most consistent single-food signal, likely the omega-3s. Oily fish a couple of times a week is where the evidence points. Eating fish outperforms fish-oil capsules in the data - see Supplements: an honest guide.
- Nuts - unusually for nutrition, actual randomised trials: adding a daily handful of mixed nuts improved count, motility and morphology against controls. Cheap, easy, real trial evidence - as good as food science gets.
- Processed meat - the consistent negative. Multiple studies link high intake with worse morphology and motility. Swapping some of it for fish or poultry is the highest-yield single substitution on the board.
- Sugary drinks - regular high intake associates with worse parameters, over and above the weight effect. An easy cut.
- Alcohol - heavy regular drinking clearly harms parameters and hormones; the evidence on moderate drinking is genuinely mixed. Dry days are tracked on your levers board because counting them is the only way to know which category you're actually in.
What doesn't need buying
No berry, seed oil or powder has meaningful fertility evidence behind its price tag. The plate-level pattern above - which costs about the same as eating badly - is the entire nutritional playbook.
The bottom line
Diet is a moderate lever, not a miracle: expect it to help at the margins, alongside weight, and only after a full production cycle - the three-month rule applies to food like everything else. Eat the pattern, add the nuts, ease the processed meat and the drinks. Then stop thinking about it; the anxiety isn't helping either.
